Total Lindsey Oil Refinery
Total is the world’s fourth-largest publicly-traded integrated oil and gas company, with operations in more than 130 countries spanning all aspects of the petroleum industry, including Upstream operations (oil and gas exploration, development and production, LNG) and Downstream operations (refining, marketing, trading and shipping of crude oil and petroleum products). Total has more than 95,000 employees worldwide.
The local site for Total is Lindsey Oil Refinery. This is the third largest oil refinery in the country processing 10 million tons of crude per annum. It was established in the 1960s five miles from the Humber River estuary. Its geographic position allows it to take advantage of discoveries in the North Sea and LOR was the first refinery in the UK to process North Sea Oil.
Some of the most advanced refining and conversion processes in the industry enable the refinery to process over forty different types of crude oil. Continuous investment in technology means that LOR can be flexible and efficient in its activities and meet changes in market demand.
Deep water berthing allows some of the largest crude tankers in operation to dock and was a major factor in the decision to build the 500-acre refinery site there. Crude oil is imported via two pipelines, connecting the 1,000-metre jetty to the refinery 5 miles away.
